Abstract |
Background The association of osteoarthritis (OA) with increased bone mass is controversial. This study was aimed to examine the correlation between bone mineral density (BMD) and knee OA.
Methods We measured the mean BMD at L2, L3 and L4 by Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT) and Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), and knee OA was assessed from a weightbearing anteroposterior radiograph and graded on a scale of 0 to 4. The examined population was divided into non-OA (grade≤1) and OA (grade≥2) group. Osteophytes and joint space narrowing were also evaluated separately. We assessed the association of BMD with knee OA, with osteophytes, and with joint space narrowing.
Results The subjects included 209 women and 77 men. Of these, 158 had no OA, 128 had knee OA. The BMD of the OA group was significantly higher than that of the non OA group (p<0.01). However, mean BMD in those with joint space narrowing OA was not higher than in those with no OA (p>0.05).
Conclusion The patients with OA of the knee had significantly increased BMD, and the BMD was higher in those with osteophytosis of the knee, but the BMD was not necessarily associated with joint space narrowing. We conclude that, higher BMD are `bone-formers` and thus, present with an increased tendency toward osteophytosis, but knee joint space narrowing was not associated with increased BMD.
